Dharma

Fundamental

Generosity

The spirit of generosity is deeply ingrained in the vision and operations of the Swiss-Lanka Dharma Centre. Generosity, or dana in Pali, is considered a fundamental aspect of the Buddhist teachings. It is said that the Buddha would always begin his teachings with the practice of generosity before moving on to other aspects of the spiritual path.

Generosity is not just a one-time event but a practice that can be cultivated and developed. It is considered the foundation of the spiritual path, preceding ethical behavior and meditation. When we engage in acts of generosity, we experience positive emotions such as loving-kindness and compassion. It also helps us develop a sense of interconnectedness and supports the practice of letting go or renunciation.

At the Swiss-Lanka Dharma Centre, many individuals generously contribute their time and effort without expecting compensation. They freely offer their support to the infrastructure and activities of the center. Additionally, the monks and the teachers at the center offer their teachings without payment. This tradition reflects the way teachings were offered during the time of the Buddha, where the gift of the Dhamma was freely given to all who chose to receive it.

As recipients of this gift, individuals have the opportunity to practice dana by caring for others, developing the capacity to let go, and supporting the availability of these teachings for the benefit of all. The practice of generosity creates a joyful and interconnected environment within the center and plays a vital role in the functioning of the Swiss-Lanka Dharma Centre.

By emphasising the importance of generosity, the center fosters a spirit of giving and supports the growth and well-being of individuals on their spiritual paths.

Generosity

The gift of the Dhamma excels all gifts; The taste of the Dhamma excels all tastes; delight in the Dhamma excels all delights. The eradication of Craving (i.e., attainment of arahatship) overcomes all ills (samsara dukkha).
